Kumbhvade is a sight to behold, surrounded on all sides with lush green countryside, providing a much-needed escape to the hustle-bustle of life. All that one hears is the ever-loving chirping of the birds, the rustling of the leaves, and the gentle swaying of the trees in the wind. Its quaint and splendidly themed streets, lined with beautiful traditional houses, constantly illuminate with the warm lights of people forever immersed in the cheerful banter with their neighbours and family.

The people of Kumbhvade are warm and welcoming, and I have had the privilege of growing up in such a close-knit community. Our festivals are marked with a joy and enthusiasm that is incredibly infectious, and our nights are celebrated with song and dance. I have some of my most precious memories here, such as teaching the local kids swimming in the nearby lake and enjoying a holy dip with my friends on the day of the 'Ganpati Visarjan'.

The most cherished memory of my village is visiting my grandparents’ farm on the outskirts of Kumbhvade. I could spend hours playing in the cornfields, and after a hard day’s work, we could sit and listen to my grandfather’s stories of the tales passed down generation after generation. Venkal Chakkarai (b.1880) participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement started by Mahatma Gandhi. In 1930 K.T.Paul went to England to participate in the Round Table Conference. He decried the tendency among some Christians to keep aloof from the National Movement.

Susil Kumar Rudra was an Indian educationalist and associate of Mahatma Gandhi and C F Andrews & served as the first Indian principal of St Stephen's College, Delhi. Rudra was a close friend and associate of Gandhi and of C F Andrews. On Gandhi's maiden visit to Delhi after his return from South Africa, he stayed with S.K. Rudra at his official residence. In 1911, Rudra helped Lala Hardayal, a Stephanian who headed the Ghadar Movement leave the country. Barhmabandhab Upadhyaya (1861-1907) a ‘Hindu Catholic’ sadhu and theologian, played a leading role in the Swadeshi Movement. He edited Sandhya, a national journal founded in 1904, and it had a decisive influence on the masses because it was the only vernacular paper in Bengali, which boldly advocated complete Indian Nationalism.
